Oswestry Youth Café (OYC) was formed in 2001 as a voluntary group run by committee. It was the wish of Oswestry Town Council Youth Council to have a town centre facility where they could hang out meet friends and be safe. The group set about looking for the appropriate premises and by chance the group were offered the use of the former hotel bar at the Queens Hotel. Oswestry Youth Council was supported by Oswestry Town Council and the local service and by working in partnership young people had access to sessions early in 2002.

The
Café is open 6 days a week and has a varied schedule of activities and it attracts in the region of 40 young people. Firedrakes, a strategic battle games club, meets at the cafe on Friday evenings and has a loyal membership of 25-30 young people. This group is operating as a self financing group within Oswestry Youth Café  and helps to contribute to the café running costs.

Over the project Oswestry Youth Café  has been at the forefront of youth provision in the town. It is affiliated to Shropshire Youth Association and follows their recommended procedures on safe guarding children, health and safety, first aid etc. The café has had a constant volunteer support network and has assisted 4 volunteers in finding permanent paid work locally. The café usually has between 8-10 willing volunteers supporting sessions with 1 paid member of staff. The group currently have 228 young people aged between 9 and 19 registered as members.
